Brightwell Blueberry is a dependable, productive rabbiteye variety known for its firm, flavorful berries and vigorous upright growth. The medium-large berries have good blue color, a small dry picking scar, and a sweet traditional blueberry flavor.
Brightwell produces fruit over an extended harvest period, often lasting approximately five weeks. It is an excellent choice for fresh eating, freezing, baking, jams, preserves, and home orchards. Brightwell has also been one of the more reliable rabbiteye varieties following spring freezes.
Brightwell is especially well suited to North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, and the Gulf Coast. UF/IFAS includes Brightwell among the more productive rabbiteye varieties recommended for North Florida and the Panhandle.
Brightwell has a reported chilling requirement of approximately 350–400 hours, but it generally flowers alongside varieties requiring closer to 500–550 chill hours. Its berries are firm, round, flavorful, and suitable for hand picking.
Best Pollinator Partners
Brightwell is partially self-fertile, but planting another rabbiteye variety nearby will generally improve fruit set, berry size, and overall production.
The strongest recommended pollinator partners from our blueberry selection are:
These varieties are specifically recommended as pollinators for Brightwell because their flowering periods provide dependable overlap.
Plant the different varieties within approximately 50 feet of one another so bees can move easily between the flowers. Rabbiteye blueberries should be paired with other rabbiteye varieties rather than depending on Southern Highbush blueberries for pollination.
North Florida Growing Note
Brightwell is one of the better rabbiteye choices for North Florida and the Florida Panhandle. UF/IFAS groups Brightwell with Powderblue, Tifblue, and Woodard as productive varieties that are less susceptible to frost damage than early-flowering rabbiteyes such as Beckyblue and Climax.
Brightwell can produce very heavy crops. Once the plant matures, yearly pruning and good care following harvest help prevent overcropping and encourage a dependable bloom the following season.
Ripe Brightwell berries may crack during periods of frequent rainfall. Pick fully ripe berries regularly, especially when heavy summer rain is expected.
Blueberries have shallow roots and grow best with approximately three inches of pine bark or pine straw mulch. Plant in full sun and acidic, well-drained soil. Avoid locations where water remains after heavy rain; a raised mound or raised bed can be used where drainage is poor. UF/IFAS recommends a soil pH between approximately 4.0 and 5.5.
